Homemade Chili’s Mozzarella Sticks

Ingredients

  • 1 block of mozzarella cheese (cut into thick slices)

  • all-purpose flour

  • 4 eggs (whisked)

  • Italian breadcrumbs

  • salt

  • black pepper

  • onion powder

  • garlic powder

  • paprika

  • Oil (for frying)

  • Nashville Hot Sauce:
  • cayenne pepper

  • paprika

  • onion powder

  • garlic powder

  • brown sugar

  • oil

Directions

  • Cut the mozzarella cheese into thick slices.
  • In a bowl, add the flour.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs.
  • In another bowl, combine the Italian breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.
  • Dip each mozzarella slice into the flour, coating it evenly.
  • Next, dip it into the whisked eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  • Finally, coat it in the seasoned breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  • Repeat the process (flour, egg, breadcrumbs) for a double coating to ensure a thick, even crust.
  • Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a tray or plate and freeze for at least 1 hour (or longer for a firmer coating).
  • Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Carefully fry the mozzarella sticks for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  • Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • In a bowl, combine cayenne pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and brown sugar.
  • Add some of the hot frying oil to the spice mixture and stir until it forms a paste-like sauce.
  • Toss the fried mozzarella sticks in the hot sauce until evenly coated.
